Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, which carries what you see to the brain. It is often linked to a buildup of pressure inside the eye and tends to run in families. Over time it causes permanent vision loss, and it is often discovered only after the disease is present. That is why testing matters.
Are you at higher risk?
- You are over 40 and have a family history of glaucoma
- You are African-American: the Glaucoma Research Foundation recommends a thorough check every one to two years after age 35
- You have diabetes or high blood pressure
- You are Hispanic American and in an older age group
- You use steroids, for example a steroid inhaler for asthma
- You have had an eye injury, even years ago
How testing works
A glaucoma test is usually part of a routine eye exam. One test measures what happens when a puff of air is blown across the eye; another uses a special device, after numbing drops, that touches the surface of the eye to measure its pressure. Raised pressure is a key sign but not a diagnosis. True glaucoma testing means examining the retina and optic nerve at the back of the eye, often with dilated pupils.
Macular degeneration
Macular degeneration affects the macula, the part of the eye responsible for fine detail and sharp central vision. There is currently no cure, but treatments can slow its progress or improve vision, depending on the type.
For the dry form, treatment starts with routine eye exams, especially after 60, to catch it early. If it is found, you may be prescribed a specific mix of high-dose zinc and antioxidants that has been shown to slow it. The wet form may be treated with laser surgery, light-activated dyes, or drugs injected into the eye. No treatment can promise to stop the disease, so speak frankly with your eye doctor about the risks and limits.
Cataracts
A cataract is a clouding of the eye's lens that blurs vision, mildly at first and more over time. It is usually associated with aging.
During your eye health evaluation we examine your lens for signs of a cataract. If one is clouding your vision, Dr. Terry refers you to a trusted and respected surgeon, since surgery is the only known cure, and we provide your care before and after the operation. Cataract surgery co-management
Diabetic eye care
There is no separating diabetes and vision. If you have diabetes, you should understand the vision problems that become more likely because of it. Adults with diabetes are often advised to have eye exams more frequently than other adults.
