Your visit, one step at a time
Most visits follow the same six steps. Here is each one, so nothing about your exam is a surprise.
Book your exam
Call (740) 594-3718 or ask our assistant here on the site. Dr. Terry sees patients Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 4 PM.
Check your coverage
We accept most vision plans for whatever part of the exam your plan covers. Tell us your insurance company when you book and we will confirm your coverage.
Bring what helps
Bring your insurance cards, your current glasses or contact lenses, and a list of the medications and supplements you take. Your pupils will probably be dilated, so plan for that.
Want contact lenses? Say so when you book. A contact lens exam includes extra testing to measure the curve of your eye.
Your exam
Dr. Terry checks your prescription, the health of your eyes and how your eyes work together as a team. The tests run from reading a chart like the one above to looking at the tissues inside your eye with a high-powered lens.
He takes the time to explain your results, describe your options and listen to what you need.
Your prescription
You leave with a written prescription and a summary of your exam. The prescription is valid anywhere in the U.S.
Contact lens wearers can usually try lenses the same day as the exam, and can even go home with a few samples before deciding.
Your eyewear, your choice
Dr. Terry provides eye care only and makes no income from selling glasses or contacts. Buy your eyewear at the Vision Center where we practice, or at any other eyewear provider you choose.
Dr. Justin Terry, O.D.
A National Board Certified optometrist who lives here in Athens and has seen patients at this Vision Center since 2013.
He graduated from the IAUPR School of Optometry in 2010. On an externship in McLean, Virginia, he observed cataract surgery, LASIK and corneal transplants. He then joined his father, Dr. Robert Terry, in private practice in Gallipolis, started seeing patients part-time at the Athens Walmart Vision Center in 2013, and took the practice over in early 2018.
Away from the practice he spends time with his wife and two children, and enjoys the outdoors, hunting and staying active.

Questions patients ask
Straight from our patients, about how the practice works inside the Vision Center.
Are you employed by Walmart?
No. Dr. Terry is an independent doctor of optometry who chose to locate his practice at Walmart, which is his landlord. He makes no income from selling glasses or contacts, only from providing comprehensive exams and treating eye disease.
How can your fees be lower than other eye doctors?
Our overhead is lower here, and the convenient location keeps us busy seeing patients all day. You still get a thorough exam with advanced diagnostic instruments, from a doctor who completed the same four years of training every optometrist completes and was licensed by the state after extensive testing.
Will I get a written prescription?
Yes. You leave with a written prescription and a summary of your exam. The prescription is valid anywhere in the U.S.
Will you accept my insurance plan?
We accept most vision plans for whatever portion of the exam cost the plan covers. Tell us your insurance company and we will confirm your coverage.
